10 Best Shoes for Supination I Tried in 2018 (UPDATED)

There are many complex definitions which are used to describe supination. However, it’s very simple to understand. In the simplest terms supination is when the outside of your foot takes the entire weight of the body. As you may already know the weight of the body usually spreads on the entire base of the foot, not just on its outer side.

However, the good news is that many shoe manufacturers are directly addressing this slight issue by releasing designs, which will help you walk and run better. Luckily for you, I have done all the research and testing so you don’t have to. Let me help you find the best shoes for supination because..

I’m a fellow supinator and I am here to help.

Fun Fact

Did you know…..

The first sneaker was made in the USA in 1916.

They were originally called ‘keds’.

Here is me trying to model my shoe:

So lets get into it, below there is my list of the best shoes for supination in 2018:

If you are looking for a comfortable great overall shoe, then the Asics Gel Nimbus 18 is a great choice. This was my number one shoe and I even invested in a pair. So these were my favorite for sure. Well, the shoes come with the infamous Gel® Technology, giving stability and a softer landing upon every foot strike. They also have a seamless upper, which help make the shoes great for speed and comfort.

    The Good
    • Lightweight design
    • Seamless upper great for speed
    • FluidFit technology
    • Gel cushioning system for added comfort
    • Recommended for durability
    The Bad
    • Narrow toe box
    • Outer sole flexibility
    Upper

Made with a sock-like fit, the seamless upper gives a better aesthetic look to the shoe. Asics have gone out of their way to ensure there are many colorways to suit the needs of runners. It has many added benefits with breathability being key. The quality of fabrics used for the upper is to be desired with a luxurious yet comfortable feel.

    Midsole

Based on the infamous gel technology. The shoes are ideal for those with knee and hip pain, which is often associated with underpronation (supination). The best part of the midsole is that it’s tough and so it doesn’t sacrifice comfort like other shoes would. The DuraSponge technology gives this shoe the upper hand. Therefore, the cushioning provided throughout the full midsole is very effective at absorbing the impact. And is far better than its competition.

    Outer Sole

The outer sole has an abrasion-resistant rubber. While it is great for durability, it still makes the surface less flexible than some alternatives to help balance the seamless upper. The midsole gives a spongier complete bottom with the required cushioning and flexibility.

    Overall

The shoes are a very good option and should be considered when looking at the overall benefits. With a distinct upper and one of the best cushioning technologies in the market, it proves to be a good-looking comfortable shoe for supination. These had my attention the moment I wore them. They just fit my foot like a glove and I was ready to go running in them

      Upper

If you are looking to keep your feet dry as long as possible, then the OnClouds upper is one of the best options. Based on the 3D Air Mesh design, the upper comes with innovative lacing based on a traditional tongue design. This is made to combine breathability and lateral support. A high quality upper has been used to complement the pods.

Based on the Cloudtech design, the midsole is supportive and comfortable. If you experience discomfort while walking or running, the midsole offers a neutral arch support, which so many people look for in shoes. With an added honeycomb pattern for grip, the midsole also protects your foot from slipping inside the shoe.

      Outer Sole

Gone are the days of classic outer soles and the On Cloudflyer is here to support this idea. While some alternatives struggle to innovate in this crucial area, the design offers very good traction, flexibility, and shock absorption. With the impressive high-grade EVA, the design offers a feel, which is unitary and allows the runner to not actually feel like they are running on pods. With the new speed-board design, the outer sole also offers improved stability.

      Overall

With an innovative design and a lightweight construction, the shoes are recommended for underpronation. These shoes look very different from other supination running shoes which shows that there is still room for innovation in this category. They fit very well and based on the innovative designs and new technology used in the midsole. So, we recommend them, as they have high levels of cushioning for those hard landings. It is safe to say these are one of the best shoes for supination.

The carbon rubber used throughout the sole gives the desired grip and traction needed for various activities. Also, the well thought out Omega Flex grooves allows for better foot flexibility providing a more natural running gait. Another strong point of the shoes is the outer sole. It is here that you have the ability to work with a durable rubber construction. The AHAR+ rubber is constructed in the areas where the foot strikes the ground. It also has grooves strategically placed for improved flexibility. It ensures you get value for your buck when purchasing this durable long lasting shoe for supination.

                    Overall

If you are looking for a shoe with a great design and durability for supinators. Then, this would be the favorable option. It is one of the better options you can choose when looking into purchasing an affordable shoe to aid in supination pain when running and walking.

                      Marathon Runners

As comprehensive as I have tried to be with my list if you are still not satisfied. Then below I have made a list of a few things I believe you should consider before purchasing a pair. So, before I help you, it is important that you understand what supination really is.

                      Supination (Underpronation)?

Well, we discussed what supination was in greater detail in my previous post. But here is the basic definition of supination.

Supination is the inward roll of the foot, as the foot touches the ground.

                      Right Foot Supination Strike
Right Foot Strike with and without Shoe

There are various types of supination which need to be addressed accordingly. Some are more damaging than others. One of the most crucial conditions is excessive supination. You would need to tackle this as soon as possible. As it can lead to serious problems if you don’t look into it.

If you are looking to deal with supination with a more complex approach. Then you can also use exercises to improve the biomechanics and health of your feet. Exercises and massages are highly recommended to improve strength and relaxation of the foot. The areas which you should focus on strengthening are; hamstrings, calves and even the quads.

P.S. Just to let you know, supination and underpronation are the exact same thing so don’t get confused if some people use one term and not the other.

                      Tackling Supination

                      Stretching

Supination can often be hereditary. As we know by now, this problem arises when the body weight is placed on the outer part of the foot.

And, Overpronation occurs when the inner part of the foot takes most of the weight of your body. Both these conditions are often linked to problems such as Plantar Fasciitis, shin splints, clawed toes and further problems up the leg at the knee and hip level. One group of people who are specifically exposed to supination are those who have high arches. This is why it is important to purchase shoes that provide support for your foot arch.

So how do you know if you are a supinator? Well.. there are a few methods. One of the most popular methods is the wet foot test. This is the fastest and most affordable option which will help you understand your gait better.

It is very simple, all you do is step on a piece of paper with a wet foot. If the entire foot is not outlined and you only see the outer part of the foot and reduced marks of the midfoot, then you are a supinator. Which means you will need a shoe to help your supination gait.

However, if you don’t have the time to carry out a wet foot test, then the following methods will help understand if you are a supinator or not. These are:

                      • Frequent sprain ankles
                      • Toes pointing outwards when standing
                      • Ankle pain or swelling when walking or running
                      • Knee pain after a walk or run
                      • Wearing the outer edges of the shoes
                      • Shin pain when running
                      • Calf and Achilles tendons tighten
                      • Running or walking towards one side

If you do find that the above applies to you then it is time for you to find a pair of supination shoes to help make walking less painful. However, if you are an avid runner, then it’s crucial you get the right support and grip from a supination shoe. As you don’t want to be running and constantly picking up other injuries. This is why it is important to find the right shoe that fits you properly.

Key Features to Look Out For in Supination Shoes

Choosing the best supination shoes is not as complicated as it used to be. As many shoes now allow you to use your own orthotic insoles for a more custom experience. Which means us supinators can buy any shoes in reality. Still, there are always a few characteristics you need to look into before you make a well-informed decision. These are:

                      Arch Support

                      Arch Suppor for Supination Shoe

Arch support is important as you need a shoe that enhances your gait. If the arch support is not there, then you might as well be back at square one and wearing shoes that don’t help your feet. As you need your foot arch to be supported whether you are walking or running.

It can be easy when finding a running shoe for supination. However, if you also want to be using these shoes casually or at work, then you would need a shoe that provides support throughout the day. So, the arch support is crucial in a supination shoe.

                      Comfort

                      Supination Shoe Comfort

As with all shoes, when it comes to comfort, there are different areas you need to look at. The design of the upper and the midsole is important. But the quality of the materials can also considerably improve the comfort of a certain design.

They all equally play a role and cohesively work together. As you wouldn’t want a shoe that has a great midsole but the upper to be tough and graze your skin. You need the right balance from outsole to upper. So this is also an important factor you should take into consideration before choosing a shoe.

                      Breathability

                      Supination Shoe Breathability

The shoes need to be breathable. We have all worn shoes for long period of times and found that our feet tend to get to get hot and sweaty. So breathability is very important.

Manufacturers are always looking for new unique ways of improving breathability. One of the most common choices is using a mesh pattern for the upper. As this gives the shoe optimum inflow and outflow of air. At the same time, using overlays can also be important for durability and fit. So, in almost all shoe designs, the right combination of mesh and overlays needs to be balanced for optimum breathability.

                      Durability

                      Supination Shoe Durability

Finally, the durability of the shoes can be impacted by many variables. As the full shoe from the upper to the outsole needs to be durable. Otherwise its not worthy of purchasing.

If you are running every day, you will find that your needs may slightly differ to someone looking for a casual supination shoe. Which means you would need a shoe that is far more durable when running. As the midsole outer sole and upper would go through a lot more wear and tear. This is why it is important to read reviews and carry out some research before purchasing a pair of shoes.

                      Conclusion

Whether you are looking for a pair of walking or running shoes for supination. You should carry out some research. It is important to start with the right support. Then take a look at comfort, durability, and design. As it will only benefit your supinating feet. So, make sure you know what you want to help you pick the right shoe that can take you through your miles.
